An Introduction to DLP & LCD Projectors

There are a multitude of specs and features to take into account when buying for example a new or used LCD Projector. This article will briefly discuss two parameters that are crucial to know about, brightness and projector panel type or technology. By learning about these two things, you will be better equipped to choose the best projector for your purposes.

 

Lumens or Brightness

Often the most noticeable projector parameter is brightness. Your screening environment will often dictate what you choose and how many lumens (the measure of brightness) you need. Also related to brightness and projection environment is adjustability (projection angle and distance), when using portable compact projectors on the go this can be important. If you are willing to spend more money, you can usually get more lumens or brightness in a projector. The following are some rough guidelines for recommended projector brightness levels in lumens. Remember these are only loose guidelines. As technology advances, brighter projectors will be cheaper and the standards will move upwards.

 

• 3000 or more ANSI lumens. Good for projecting in bright areas, convention stages, outdoor concerts or large theater venues.

• 1800 to 3000 ANSI is mainly used for educational applications like in big classrooms or auditorium meetings. It can also be used for convenient home entertainment viewing and enjoyment, especially when you’re not satisfied with just your TV and want your collection of DVDs to be projected well.

• 1000 to 1800 ANSI is suitable for simple presentations, especially in business applications like meetings, personal projects or brief overviews. It can be suitable for entertainment purposes, but be prepared to consider getting a bigger resolution.

 

DLP and LCD

LCD and DLP are currently the dominant projector panel technologies. LCD happens to be the most popular technology these days. LCD Viewsonic Projector panel technology may cost slightly less than DLP panels. LCD technology also seems to provide more vibrant color saturation and greater levels of brightness.

Projectors utilizing DLP technology can cost the same or slightly more than LCD projectors but are generally thought to produce deeper, darker black levels and higher contrast ratios than LCDs. DLP also has a reputation for working well in home theater use and for doing a great job at  projecting film like images. Some feel that DLP lamps are stronger and generally last longer than LCD ones.
