Soapdish: Farcical comedy in reference to a soap opera monarch who’s trailing her clutch–on the show, and her life. Field and Kline are a treat to watch playing larger than life characters, however Whoopi is trashed, Downey is miscast, and the script (by Robert Harling and Andrew Bergman) imagines “anxious” equals “funny.” Cast includes Sally Field, Kevin Kline, Robert Downey, Jr., Cathy Moriarty, Whoopi Goldberg, Elisabeth Shue, Carrie Fisher, Garry Marshall, Teri Hatcher, Paul Johansson, Costas Mandylor, Stephen Nichols, Kathy Najimy, and Ben Stein.  (95 minutes, 1991)

The Shadow: Lamont Cranston, having lived a life of ethical degradation, is “reborn” as a singleminded crimefighter with the talent to haze gentlemen’s minds. This adaptation of the venerable mush novels and cherished stereo show (carried to the theaters before in the late 1930s, and in a 1940 serial comes frustratingly close to performing, although flounders. Cranston is both inscrutable and boring. Incredible production layout and wonderful outcomes get lost in a film that keeps the viewer at Ann’s magnitude all the way through. What a waste of an awesome supporting cast! Cast includes Alec Baldwin, John Lone, Penelope Ann Miller, Peter Boyle, Ian McKellen, Tim Curry, Jonathan Winters, and Sab Shimono.  (105 minutes, 1994)

Sidewalk Stories: Alluring, Chaplinesque fantasy that, in its own humble way, boldly remarks on the plight of the destitute in America. Aisle stars as a destitute gentleman battling for existence on the roads of Greenwich Village who finds himself caring for a small child whose father has been stabbed by robbers. Cast includes Charles Aisle, Nicole Alysia, Sandye Wilson, Darnell Williams, and Trula Hoosier. (97 minutes, 1989)

Law of Desire: Surreal, hedonistic, and comical comedy concentrating on a gay love triangle, with equal treatments of desire, sex, fantasy, and disaster. Cast includes Eusebio Poncela, Carmen Maura, Antonio Banderas, Miguel Molina, Bibi Andersson, Manuela Velasco, and Nacho Martinez. (100 minutes, 1987)

Fracture: Hopkins plays a cold, determining gentleman who shoots his spouse once he finds she’s been in bed with an L.A.P.D. lieutenant. However there is no definative proof, which makes the case a perfect one for partner D.A. Gosling, who’s just getting ready to move on to a cushy job at a high-end law firm.
