Rent-a-Kid: While the head of an orphanage takes a holiday, dad Nielsen takes over with a plan to raise money by renting out kids. While unsurprising, this stupid premise is surprisingly effective. Eventually 3 youngsters are rented by a hip ’90s couple considering adopting. A respectable family flick. Cast includes Leslie Nielsen, Christopher Lloyd, Matt McCoy, Sherry Miller, and Amos Crawley. Dusty: Discreet, feeling little film in regards to a dingo (crazy mutt of the bush), seized when a doggy and ultimately brought up by an old gentleman (Kerr). Grownups can like it as much as babies. Cast includes John Richardson. Bill Kerr, Noel Trevarthen, Carol Bums, Nicholas Holland, John Stanton, and Kate Edwards. (88 minutes, 1982)
Only Two Pan Play: Well-intentioned filming of the Kingsley Amis novel That Undecided Sensation (adjusted by Bryan Forbes), yearning for fast giggles instead of satire. Peter Vendors is a librarian flirting with a local counleman�s wife. Will they take things to far? Cast includes Peter Vendors, Mai Zetterling, Virginia Maskell, Richard Attenborough, and Kenneth Griffith. (106 minutes, 1962)
Southland Tales: Impressive cast is trashed in an overlong, overwrought wallow set in 2008 Southern California three years after a catastrophic atomic assault on Texas has turned America into a patrol state. Concentrates on a few individuals trying to subsist in this postapocalyptic atmosphere, including a B action film performer, a porn megastar turned Television commentator, and an L.A. patrol officer with a split personality. Cast includes Dwayne Johnson, Seann William Scott, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Mandy Moore, Justin Timberlake, Nora Dunn, John Larroquette, Bai Ling, Jon Lovilz, Cheri Oteri, Amy Poehler, Lou Taylor Pucci, Miranda Richardson, Wallace Shawn, Holmes Osborne, Kevin Smith, Christopher Lambert, Janeane Garofolo, Beth Grant, Zelda Rubinstein, and Curtis Armstrong. The Kingdom: The terrorism story is reinvented as an action film. It is a blood-pumping tale of an elite FBI team that voyages surreptitiously to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, to examine a massive explosion at a U.S. living area. Cast includes Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper, Jason Bateman, Ashraf Barhom, Ali Suliman, Jeremy Piven, Danny Huston, Richard Jenkins, Frances Fisher, Anna Deavere Smith, and Tim McGraw. Red Salute: Absconder screwball Stanwyck meets no nonsense cadet Young in this clone of It Occurred One Day with crazy sociopolitical wrinkle. Barbara’s boyfriend (Albright) is an interigator who makes Communists talk. This is a definitely a new twist. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Robert Young, Hardie Albright, Cliff Edwards, Ruth Donnelly, and Gordon Jones. (78 minutes, 1935)
My Son John: Archetypal apple-pie parents (Hayes, Jagger) suspect their child (Stroller) of being a communist in this reactionary period piece. DramaticalIy overwrought, however this film is fascinating as a social history. Stroller (who’s brilliant) died before film was completed. Cast includes Helen Hayes, Robert Stroller, Dean Jagger, Van Heflin, Frank McHugh, and Richard Jaeckel. (122 minutes, 1952)
Night Nurse: Phenomenal, hard story of nurse (Stanwyck) who couldn�t disregard bizarre goings on in home where she works. Blondell adds zingy aid and it is one of Gable’s most impressive early appearances. Cast includes Barbara Stanwyck, Ben Lyon, Joan Blondell, Clark Gable, Charlotte Merriam, and Charles Winninger.
Nutcracker the Motion Picture: Much of this rendition of The Nutcracker, acted by the Pacific Notthwest Ballet, is like a music video with rapid cutting and close-ups of legs, faces, and elbows. This is extremely irritating. However the Tchaikovsky music is, obviously, amazing, as are Maurice Sendak’s sets and costumes. Cast includes Hugh Bigney, Vanessa Acute” Patricia Barker, Plod Walthall, Russell Burnett, and the voice of Julie Harris. (89 minutes, 1986)
