Li’l Abner: Vigorous Gene DePaul-Johnny Mercer lyrical based on Broadway rendition of AI Capp’s cartoon; loud and brassy, with cheesy comedy, some excellent melodies. Stubby Kaye is fine as Marryin’ Sam; other Dog-patch characters vividly enacted. Look acute for youthful Valerie Harper and Beth Howland amid the chorus gals. The Hearse: Passably preoccupying spun wool right off the female in tormented house that is inhabited by criminals with an unsatisfying summarization. Cast includes Trish Minivan Devere, Joseph Cotten, David Gautreaux, Donald Hotton, Med Flory, and Donald Petrie. (100 minutes, 1980)
Two Marines are being held responsible for the death of a fellow marine. They claim they were ordered to punish private Santiago, and his death was not intended. Lt. Daniel Kaffee will try to save the marines and get to the bottom of the case.
Raising champ Vargas: A quaint film of a self-fashioned adolescent stud on N.Y.C’s Lower East Side who chases a snobby gal with such tenacity that he wins her over. A fully detailed cut of life filmed with such quaintness that you believe the discussions are overheard rather than orchestrated. Cast includes Victor Rasuk, Judy Marte, Donna Maldonado, and Wilfree Vasque. (88 minutes, 2003)
Slaughter: Stevens and Torn are far too high quality for this brutal action film where ex-Green Beret Brown who goes after the bad guys that had murdered his parents. Cast includes Jim Brown, Stella Stevens, Rip Torn, Don Gordon, Cameron Mitchell, Marlene Clark, and Robert Phillips. (92 minutes, 1972)
Disturbia: Kale has had his life turned upside down. His fathers death, which he feel responsible for has traumatized him badly. Snapping on an insensitive teacher, he punches the guy out. Instead of jail time he must serve a period of house confinement. Going stir crazy stuck at home, Kale, and his girlfriend Ashley, start spying on the neighbors. This voyeurism gets serious when they start to suspect that one of the neighbors is a serial killer.
Rebel Rousers: Designer Mitchell isn’t gratified while Dem keeps competing to see who can win over Mitchell’s pregnant lady friend. Nicholson, decked out in shocking striped slacks, robs the show in this entertaining time tablet. This movie was filmed in 1967. Cast includes Cameron Mitchell, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Dem, Diane Ladd, and (Harry) Dean Stanton. (78 minutes, 1970)
